Vinnie Van GoGo’s Pizzeria in Savannah, GA: Review

Whenever the family and I are downtown, Vinnie Van GoGo’s at City Market is always the easiest and quickest place to get some great food and beer. While convenient, the questions remains, is this pizza good?

Food

Every time we stop by their to-go window for a slice and beer, we keep things simple by ordering pepperoni for the adults and a cheese for the child. Usually, one slice is enough. While thin, the slices are large and filling enough for the average person.

The crust is probably my favorite part of the pizza. Thin and toasty, the dough used by Vinnie’s is a good base for their sauce and toppings.

The sauce is sweet, but light enough to avoid being overwhelming. For me, it’s important that the sauce doesn’t overpower the cheese and other toppings.

Overall, the sauce, dough and toppings are solid. While the pizza can get a bit greasy, that’s not really something I would complain about. There’s nothing better than coupling a greasy slice of pizza with a hoppy IPA.

AMBIENCE

The restaurant itself is in a great location at the east end of the City Market. We did step inside for some pictures, but we’ve never sat down at the restaurant. It’s in one of the most walkable areas in Savannah and there’s tons of places to sit throughout City Market. Therefore, we’ve never really seen the point of asking for a seat.

If you really feel the need to get a table, there’s a decent amount of outdoor seating and a few places to sit inside.

The restaurant itself is pretty simple but that’s how I like it. When I go to Vinnie’s, I’m there for the food and beer. What’s important here is that the to-go window is easily identifiable and quick. There are lines most of the time, but the wait is never too bad. While you’re waiting, grab an ice cream next door and enjoy beautiful Savannah while you wait.

BOTTOM LINE

Overall, Vinnie Van GoGo’s is a Savannah main staple that focuses on quick slices and beer to-go. The pizza is well-balanced with its toasty crust, sweet but mild sauce and rich mozzarella. If you’re going to stop by for some pizza, I recommend coupling your slice with a hoppy IPA.

The best part about this restaurant is that it’s one of the few places in Savannah you can grab food this quickly. Savannah is a city that prides itself on walkability, so it only makes sense you’d have some quick and easy street food options. Funny enough, not too many others are taking advantage of this formula that clearly works.

Vinnie Van GoGo’s is a Savannah Secret Society favorite.
