The Double Wide Diner is one of two Treylor Park locations on Bay Street, literally only two blocks from one another. While that might sound needlessly redundant, the menus are very different, and the restaurants are good enough to warrant a visit to both. Having been to both locations on Bay Street, I prefer the menu and ambience of the Double Wide Diner. I’m sorry but nothing beats a good brunch menu.
During this visit we got the hot chicken waffle tacos and the biscuit Benedict. Sorry, we did not purchase drinks during this visit and thus, cannot review. What’s most important is that the restaurant was good enough for us to visit another time and buy drinks.
Food
First off, those hot chicken waffle tacos looked and sounded amazing. I don’t know why more people aren’t doing waffle tacos because it just makes sense. The menu describes it as “sweet waffles with fried chicken, hot sauce, bourbon pecan maple syrup and blueberry compote, covered with powder sugar.” If that description doesn’t get you going, you must be impossible to please.
The dish had all the flavor I was expecting and then some. I usually prefer syrup on my chicken and waffles, but this had me rethinking my entire life. Now I know for sure that blueberry compote, whatever that is, is the best topping for waffles. The only thing I can’t recall is tasting the hot sauce. Probably a good thing for me as I typically don’t care for it. Overall, one of my favorite breakfast dishes of all time.
Unfortunately, the biscuit Benedict wasn’t nearly as delicious. First off, the eggs were overcooked, which was super disappointing. The collard greens were also too crunchy to add any flavor or textural benefits to the meal. Aside from all that, the biscuits and gravy wasn’t bad. I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt here and assume the cook just had an off day because the chicken waffle tacos were great.
Ambience
For my family, ambience is just as important as the food. The Double Wide Diner does not disappoint. Walking in, the first thing I noticed was the super clean teal color. The teal LED lights reflect off the polished, stainless-steel ceiling that is very clearly meant to resemble an Air Stream trailer. Which is perfect because the entire diner, similarly to Air Stream trailers, is both modern and classic.
Most importantly, the restaurant was flawlessly clean. No sticky tables and dirty floors here.
Looking back, my favorite detail were the golden framed televisions.
Bottom Line
Overall, The Double Wide Diner offers a great brunch experience. Despite one of our dishes flopping, everything else in the restaurant easily outweighed that fault. I highly recommend the waffle tacos. Easily one of my favorite breakfasts of all time. Next time, I’ll be sure to order drinks and post another review.
