Coco & Moss, Savannah Ga.

Coco & Moss Restaurant, Savannah: Review

Coco & Moss is a wonderfully located, Asian fusion restaurant that describes itself as having an atmosphere with both tropical and southern charm. A Savannah Secret Society favorite, the menu offers plenty of clean eating options that don’t skimp on the flavor or presentation.

The two dishes that will be highlighted are the Pretty in Pink poke bowl and Seoul-Mate bowl along with the blood orange martini and beer. For anybody wondering, Coco & Moss also has plenty of gluten free and vegetarian options that are clearly marked on their menu.

Food

Before coming to Coco & Moss, I’ve never tasted a poke bowl worth writing home about. In my experience, they’re either underwhelming or the complete opposite, smothered in every sauce known to man. This dish has the perfect balance of flavors that is at its best when you can capture every color and texture on the plate in one bite. (note: I always ask for no mango)

When you’re not in the mood for raw fish, the Seoul-Mate has you covered as another worth while dish. The steak is always cooked perfectly and tastes ridiculously tender. While the steak alone is worthy of a purchase, it’s coupled with kimchi, pickled vegetables, bean sprouts and tomatoes. That might sound basic but when expertly cooked and prepared, it becomes a truly masterful dish. I recommend asking for the curry dressing, which is the very definition of umami.

We also got a sushi shop main staple, the California Roll. While usually nothing special, this roll will really tell you how much the restaurant cares about their products. It’s almost like having good French fries or the perfect bun. Anyone can cook a burger, it’s the ingredients that matter. The Coco & Moss California roll does not disappoint.

Drinks

This visit, we ordered the Blood Orange Martini and the only IPA on the menu.

The Blood Orange Martini is fun to drink and luckily far from tasting like a typical martini. This is a semi-sour drink that’s both refreshing and strong. Most importantly, it’s not super sweet and has never left me with a headache or sugar rush.

The beer selection is a little lacking, but they did have at least one IPA and some Asian imports, which coupled well with the food.

Ambiance

While the restaurant is small, the color scheme and abundance of natural light makes the restaurant feel substantial enough. You don’t immediately realize how small the place is until you have to squeeze by the waiter/waitress on the way to the bathroom.

Ellis Square, Savannah, Ga.

Our favorite place to sit is outside. It has a great view of the City Market and Ellis Square, which is always full of colorful characters, cute dogs, cool cars and roving bachelorette parties (note: seriously though, we’ve never seen so many bridesmaids in our life!). As avid people watchers, this is one of our favorite spots in Savannah.

Bottom Line

Coco & Moss is a restaurant with great views, picture perfect food and flavors that don’t disappoint. Best experienced on a sunny day, this restaurant is perfect for people looking for a light but flavorful meal. The drinks offered are fun and refreshing but don’t expect much in the way of beer options.
