Common Restaurant, Savannah: Review

Common is a fairly unsuspecting restaurant with a small but extremely eclectic brunch menu that has a little something for everyone. A worthwhile visit, there’s lots to love in this restaurant. During this visit, the family had brunch at Common, ordering curry shrimp and grits, the cornbread skillet and drinks.

If it’s a bright and sunny day, there’s plenty of outdoor seating, but indoor seating is just as fun. The bar is a stylish place to have a drink, but our favorite part of the restaurant is the small upstairs balcony. It’s perfect for people watching!

Food

The curry shrimp and grits was a unique and bold take on a southern classic. If you love curry, you’ll love this dish. The meal was filling, and I really appreciated the twist. The grits themselves had a really good consistency that was closer to mashed potatoes than porridge, which was also appreciated.

The chorizo cornbread skillet was a delicious combination of sweet and tangy flavors. A rich slice of caramelized crusted cornbread topped with chorizo and pickled onions made for an interesting burst of flavor. I wish I could describe the flavor but there’s really nothing else like it. It simultaneously tasted like desert and breakfast, which is a pretty sound combination if you ask me.

Drinks

The Savannah Breeze is a solid fruity cocktail that isn’t too sweet. Overall, it’s a pleasant and refreshing drink but there really wasn’t anything unique about it. It’s definitely a safe choice if you’re in the mood for a midday cocktail. The beer menu was not extensive, but I was easily able to find an IPA.

Ambience

Aside from the diverse brunch menu, the ambience in this place is on point. It feels open and airy because of the natural light at the front. The general vibe of this place is a mix between rustic and gothic. It’s definitely a fun place to be in. Best seat in the house was by far over the balcony. If you’re like us and love watching other people, this is where you want to be. While the outside seats are great, nothing beats air conditioning and heating. This is Georgia and it’s spicy down here.

Bottom Line

Having brunch at The Common restaurant is undoubtedly a treat. You’re not going to find too many places that offer such a variety of different cultures in one menu. One thing to note is that there aren’t any kid options. If you have a picky eater on your hands, ordering a side plate of macaroni might be worthwhile, but it can be a little pricey for a kid’s meal.

If you’re looking for a place to try something new or just want a trendy place to have a drink, The Common is a great choice. The restaurant has plenty of historic charm and a fun menu to go along with it. While my drinks might not have been anything special, I’ll definitely be heading back for the cornbread skillet.
